The rave reviews keep on rolling in for the CX-5. Car and Driver recently put over 16 available 2021 Compact Crossover SUVs head-to-head and ranked them from worst to best. The competition brought together well-known imports from Toyota, Honda, Kia, Nissan, Hyundai, Volkswagen, and domestic models from Jeep, Ford, GMC, and Chevrolet. With so many choices in this market, Mazda has done a great job of differentiating itself as a more premium option that doesn't break the bank.

No surprises that the CX-5 is our favourite too. Car and Driver praised it for its refined interior and standard safety features as part of Mazda i-ACTIVSENSE. "The CX-5 also endears itself to us with steering and handling that are uncharacteristically responsive for the segment, and Mazda has further enhanced that ability with the addition of its G-Vectoring Control Plus technology."
The only non-Japanese car to make it into the top 5, the VW Tiguan was praised for its comfortable ride but faulted for having little cargo room with the tiny third-row seating in use.
"Honda's CR-V isn't the sportiest or sexiest compact crossover around—that'd be the Mazda CX-5—but it is well rounded." The CR-V suffers from noise problems in the cabin, but it has a decent amount of passenger and cargo space.
This popular option was applauded for its improvements in interior quality and exterior styling. However, Car and Driver also pointed out that the four-cylinder engine gets a little too noisy.
Nissan had made notable improvements over its predecessor with a better interior and engine. The ground-up redesign delivers boxier styling and thus giving it a more truck-like appearance.
In sum, the Mazda CX-5's driving dynamics and well-appointed interior keep it distinctly Mazda and set it apart from stiff competition.
