2021 Mazda CX-9 vs. 2021 Volkswagen Atlas: Performance for Your Family

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 offers better power and efficiency

The CX-9 offers one engine that hits the sweet spot for horsepower and torque. A turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder creates up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. All models pair with a six-speed automatic transmission that features manual shift mode and a drive selection switch. Paddle shifters are standard on all models except the GS. The efficiency of the engine results in a highway fuel economy rating of up to 9.1 L/100 km.

The Atlas offers two engines. One is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that is limited to 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The other is a 3.6-litre six-cylinder that offers up to 276 horsepower, but barely raises torque to 266 lb-ft.

Although the six-cylinder has more horsepower than the CX-9, it has up to 54 lb-ft less torque than the CX-9, and the four-cylinder drops even more. The CX-9's lighter weight will make its vast torque advantage feel even more significant. Moreover, both engines are much less efficient on the highway than the CX-9, with a rating of 9.9 L/100 km even on the four-cylinder.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 offers more performance technology

Another way that the CX-9 outperforms the Atlas is with G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus). Standard on all models, this technology manages engine torque in response to steering inputs to integrate acceleration forces and optimize wheel loads. 

The updated 'Plus' function applies light brakes on the outside wheels as the vehicle finishes a turn and as the steering wheel returns to center. This enhances stability and recovery from a turn, especially when an emergency manoeuvre is performed. You will also have more confidence making movements at highway speeds.
