One look at the CX-5, and you will witness some of the most refined and unique styling available in an SUV. Mix in a high-performing engine and technology, and you have an extraordinary driving experience. Here, we illustrate this by comparing it to the 2021 Toyota RAV4.
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has more power and response
The CX-5 features two powertrains that offer solid to exceptional power and performance. GX, GS, Signature, and GT trims include a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. This provides the capability you need to cover many landscapes. The RAV4's comparable (and most common) engine operates at a slightly higher horsepower, but with less torque.
For drivers who want to focus on exceptional performance, three CX-5 models make available a turbo 2.5-litre four-cylinder that outputs up to 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. That's well ahead of the gas and hybrid RAV4 lineup while nearly doubling torque.
The CX-5 features a performance-oriented six-speed automatic transmission. Turbo models also feature paddle shifters. The RAV4 doesn't offer the CX-5's drivetrain type, so the results will lack a performance feel.
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 leads in performance technology
Mazda's i-Activ AWD is a predictive system that uses sensors that constantly verify road conditions--200 times per second—and respond with the best possible torque adjustments for a more confident drive. Although the RAV4 also has an AWD system, the CX-5's works with GVC to enhance performance whether you are turning or on a straightaway.
The CX-5's edge in performance over the RAV4 widens with G-Vectoring Control (GVC). GVC considers how turns affect the vehicle. When the driver turns the steering wheel, GVC adjusts engine torque to mitigate g forces and shifts vehicle weight towards the front tires to promote stability.
This also reduces driver fatigue. GVC is part of the more comprehensive Skyactiv Vehicle Dynamics system that is a part of the CX-5, and you won't find a system like it on the RAV4.
Inside, the CX-5 and RAV4 have comparable passenger volume. However, the CX-5 provides more front headroom and rear legroom than the RAV4. The CX-5’s entry level model than the RAV’s base model, at just $27,950.
